Productivity vs Rest
What does productivity mean to you?
Recently, I was walking the dog while wearing a weighted rucking vest, listening to a podcast on health and fitness and I thought 'damn I’m really being productive'. In my mind, I was checking so many boxes. What I haven't done lately is rest.
Recently I had a call with a business coach. I have caught myself comparing my current level of productivity to last year and feeling really stuck. She was explaining to me that my problem wasn’t a lack of productivity. My problem was my definition of productivity. I’ve been burning the candle at every end for over a year to finish my first book. Now, she explained, it was time to enjoy what I had accomplished and take a break. But what would that look like?
I was raised to work hard, get stuff done, and I watched both of my parents rarely sit down to rest. The idea that doing less would actually lead to something more is a little hard to believe but it is worth exploring.
As a teacher of mindfulness, I intuitively know and preach the benefits of mental, physical, and emotional rest. Do I practice what I preach? It might be time for me to have a chat with myself. Once in a while it is good to self-examine, look inward without judgement, and listen to your body.
If you and I were having a private conversation about rest, I'd first ask you if you get enough sleep. I don't think anyone can argue the importance of sleep. I personally get good sleep. It might be my superpower. My next question would be, "what do you like to do for fun?" Make a list, expand on what those look like and start checking boxes (mixing productivity with enjoyment can still be enjoyment). Finally, I would ask you, "when was the last time you sat alone, in stillness and quiet, and just focused on your breath?" This last one is my personal favorite and one I practice daily. I would recommend you try it too.
It's possible that I am resting, albeit not enough, but enough that I want to keep moving forward. What does your rest look like? I would love to know your favorite ways to rest. If it feels good to you, refuels your soul and helps you find more creative and productive ways to be yourself, I think that is extremely productive. It seems we can have productivity and rest perfectly happy together.
